Special Thanks to The Roanoke TimesBLACKSBURG — Both Blacksburg soccer programs punched their tickets to the 3A West Region tournament on Wednesday night, but in dramatically different ways. The boys broke a scoreless tie with three goals in a three minute span, and then held off a second-half comeback attempt by Hidden Valley to knock off the Titans, 4-3, while the Bruins’ girls cruised to a 5-0 victory over Hidden Valley in the nightcap of a Conference 32 semifinal doubleheader at Blacksburg High School. There will be another double header on Friday night at Bill Brown Stadium, the Bruins’ boys will play New River Valley rival Christiansburg. The girls will face Cave Spring.

The Blacksburg girls took the drama out of their game early, as senior Eden-Elizabeth Phillips had her first career hat trick in the first half as the Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead. With Blacksburg already up 2-0, Phillips scored her first goal in the 25th minute. The senior defender then scored two more times in the next six minutes. Phillips, who will be attending West Point in the fall, was surprised with her offensive output, but credited her teammates for putting her in position to succeed. “That doesn’t really happen for a defender,” Phillips said. “I knew that I needed to finish those off for my teammates and then I started feeling it.” Maddie Dickinson and Meghan Shelton also had goals for Blacksburg (14-0-2) which dominated the action on their side of the field giving senior goalie Chris Martin a relatively easy night.
